Church History

Our church history begins with the friendship of Alex McCullough, an elementary school band teacher, and Bertram Schlossberg, a Christian Jewish professor. They bonded over a love of literature, music, and above all, the love of Jesus.

Our Story

Alex McCullough (left) and Bertram Schlossberg (right)

Our parish started as a Bible Study group in Alex and Alice McCullough's home in Scarsdale, New York. Alex was the middle school band director at Anne Hutchinson School and Alice was the director of a local preschool. The McCulloughs met Bertram Schlossberg, a Christian Jewish professor teaching at a nearby college, and invited him to their Bible Study.

A year later, Bertram Schlossberg and the McCulloughs discovered, through prayer and discussion, that the Lord wanted them to start a local church. They named the church Congregation of the Messiah and joined the Syro-Chaldean denomination whose history stemmed from the early Christian Jews. Bertram Schlossberg was ordained a priest and set as senior pastor. Alex McCullough was his first deacon.

In 1977, Fr. Bertram Schlossberg left the church to plant a second parish in Rockville, Connecticut. Four years later, Deacon Alex McCullough was ordained a priest and set as senior pastor of the congregation. In 1990,

Fr. Alex was consecrated bishop and faithfully served for the next 23 years.

In 1995, David Flores was ordained a deacon under Bishop Alex McCullough. Deacon David served for a few years at Congregation of the Messiah and was ordained a priest in 1997.  In 2004, Bishop Alex McCullough retired and Fr. David was appointed senior pastor. In 2014, Fr. David was consecrated Bishop of the Westchester Diocese and continues to pastor Congregation of the Messiah in Tuckahoe, NY.
